Overview

This is one of the great reefs in St John's. Drop off and a plateau on the south side, two caves and beautiful coral growth always make it an attractive dive destination. Often you can meet manta rays, grey reef sharks and sometimes even hammerhead or other oceanic sharks.

Description

St. John`s Gota Kebir is 250m long and 120m wide. The north ends in a drop-off that drops to 35m in places and opens into a small ledge before plunging further into the depths. The west side drops to 20 to 25m with overhangs and deep notches, then with a slight slope into the outer area where it disappears into the depths. On the east, the wall drops 20 to 30m and then turns into an overhang. The northern part falls directly into the depth. On the way there are huge gorgonians with a diameter of 3 to 4m.
The southern side is covered with coral fields. The reef wall there runs vertically down to the second plateau at 55m depth. On the plateau you can watch manta rays, gray reef sharks and hammerhead sharks as they make their moves. On the west and east side, behind the plateau at 9m, there are caves. Both run almost identically in an exciting large diameter circular path. However, please watch out for things that can fall down due to your exhaled air.

The plateau

Under the boat is the colorful plateau with a great abundance of fish. There you will find napoleon wrasses as well as barracudas, at the cleaning stations and at the edge also gray reef sharks and hammerheads. For the ascend you should have a look at the anemones and at the end at the caves.

The northeast

With the Zodiac you go to the northeast and dive down to a depth of 25 to 30m. You will find gorgonians with longnose hawkfish, one or two moray eels and schools of snappers and barbels. In the blue water you can probably see gray reef sharks and hammerheads and also manta rays sometimes pass by here. Depending on the current you can drift along in the shallower area of the reef and enjoy all the colourful corals.
