Shaab Mahmud is an extended lagoon with a depth of about 10 meters, bordered on the west by a long coral reef of particular interest.
Description
The interior of the lagoon is often visited by cruise ships, as it provides the necessary shelter for the night. Usually, the anchor is dropped on the sandy bottom inside the lagoon - near a narrow opening in the coral reef, the so-called Small Passage.
This passage, which can be passed only by a dinghy, offers a great opportunity to see the beautiful coral reef outside the lagoon.
Then a pleasant break inside the lagoon near the anchorage. During this dive hawksbill turtles can be encountered. In addition, you are sure to encounter mackerels and barracudas.

- However, the reef Beacon Rock is visited here as part of a safari.
- This reef is located at the southernmost point of the extensive coral reef of Shaab Mahmud.
- On an unfortunate night in 1876, the freighter Dunraven, which was on its way from Bombay to Newcastle, ran aground on this reef. After the massive impact, the ship sank immediately and broke into two large pieces, which today lie on the reef of Beacon Rock at depths of 18 and 28 meters.
